A Sentimental Phipps Conservatory Wedding | Michelle + Justin

September 15, 2024

Venue: Phipps Conservatory and Botanical Gardens

A Love Story with Wings

Before we even met in person, Michelle shared the kind of story that sticks with you—the kind you remember long after you hang up the phone. Her grandfather had once owned a plane, and when he passed, it was sold. Years later, she tracked it down across the country in Arizona.

That plane became the setting for one of the most heartfelt proposals I’ve ever heard. Justin, an audio engineer, convinced Michelle they were flying out to Arizona for work. But when they arrived, there was no client—just a plane, a memory, and the moment Justin asked her to marry him.

Getting to witness the next chapter of that story on their wedding day was such an honor.

A Wedding Weekend in Pittsburgh

Michelle and Justin’s wedding was a destination event for most of their guests, with the exception of one very important person—Michelle’s nana. From the beginning, Michelle talked about the influence her grandparents had on her life. It was clear that legacy, family, and storytelling would all play a part in their wedding day.

The morning started at the AC Hotel where Michelle introduced her bridesmaids to a Pittsburgh classic—Primanti Bros. sandwiches. Once everyone was ready, we made our way to Phipps Conservatory for a day that was elegant, joyful, and full of intentional moments.

A First Look (and a Nana Cameo)

Michelle and Justin shared a quiet first look before the ceremony, surrounded by the lush gardens and greenery of Phipps. As timing would have it, Nana happened to pass by shortly after—and Michelle was able to share a sweet, spontaneous moment with her as well. There are some things you can’t plan, and those often become the most treasured.

Bridal party portraits followed, with florals by Community Flower Shop perfectly matching the tone of the day—elegant, textural, and classic.

A Ceremony to Remember

Their ceremony took place in the outdoor garden, and I have to say—the rabbi was one of the most memorable officiants I’ve ever witnessed. Charismatic, thoughtful, and kind, he added so much warmth and wisdom to the ceremony that I found myself hanging onto every word. If I ever converted, he might just be the reason why.

Michelle and Justin stood under the chuppah and exchanged vows with laughter and emotion, surrounded by their favorite people.

Reception at Phipps Conservatory

After a few family and husband-and-wife portraits, the celebration moved indoors for the reception. Kelly Lynn Weddings ensured every detail was beautifully executed. Bethel Bakery made the cake, and Michelle and Justin honored tradition by cutting it just like her parents had—smearing frosting gently on each other’s faces, much to everyone’s delight.

The band from You Pick Entertainment brought the party to life, and the horah (as always) was an energetic, joyful whirlwind. Their audio guestbook from Clicksburgh Retro Rentals captured even more memories from guests throughout the night, adding to the nostalgic feel of the day.

A Wedding Rooted in Story and Sentiment

It’s not every day that a proposal involves a plane, or that a wedding is anchored in family history in such a tangible way. But Michelle and Justin’s story isn’t like everyone else’s—and that’s what made this day so special.

From start to finish, it was a celebration of love, legacy, and shared history.
